Description:
Tony Stark: …billionaire, playboy, inventor, superhero…ROCKSTAR!
Its been a long time coming but the Sweet Charity vid I was commissioned to do by
After a bit of back & forth between song ideas, she suggested ‘Let It Rock’ by Kevin Rudolph which had just been released in Australia around that time. After listening to it several times I thought the lyrics were just about spot on for Tony Stark. Im also burning the vid to a special DVD for her & remastering her vid from last years VVC "Handlebars", seeing as I have the all footage in my NLE. These will come at a later date & I will post up piccies of the goodies to go in the post.
For the most part, the vid does follow the events of the movie in a similar fashion as I was driven by the lyrics of the song, it made sense to approach it that way. The focus is mainly on Tony Stark as well – there isn’t a lot of Iron Man in action but hopefully just enough to keep most action junkies suffering from withdrawals. My own favourite parts is the actual text in newspaper headline & the final belting out of “let it rooooOOOOOoooock” where Stark raises his arms as the Jericho missile explodes.
Let It Rock will also be taking part in this years Club Vivid, which will also be my only offering for Vividcon this year as my extended bout of lethargy killed off any desire to make my other idea. A few weeks ago

I kind of wish I were one of those people who could offer in-depth second-by-second commentary on the awesomeness, because this vid deserves it. Sadly, that's never really been me, but suffice to say I loved it; favorite parts being the headlines, pounding on the suit in time and...well, pretty much all of it. Much like Handlebars, it restored my vidding squee, which was seriously beginning to fail.

And if you read down a bit you'll see Ian was a little disappointed this wasn't a premiere.

If you look in my journal down a couple of posts I recced a pretty excellent Iron Man vid as done by another person - called Butterflies & Hurricanes. Its a lot more "serious" than this vid though...

It can still be in club vivid but if it's not a premiere (as it's not anymore) I can't guarantee you a slot. [Well, chances of being in the actual show are high but it can't go on the dvd as it's not a premiere]. Just thought I'd let you know.
Fun vid though :)

As for not being on the DVD thats fine, it was originally only intended as a Sweet Charity vid anyway.
The version I was going to give you will be without credits & my usual MTV logo & small title graphic at the start. But if theres a chance now that it won't be in Club Vivid should I bother?
You also know that I had to pull out of making my other Club Vivid suggestion "Hot In The City"?

I like those bit where the music rises - I did go to some effort to make sure that the footage reflected that somehow, I think the unibeam one you mentioned is the best example.
And I hope the humbling doesn't prevent your Iron Man vid from being finished. I wanna see it, dammit & forbid you to abandon it! :P

I use Avid Liquid which is a semi-professional NLE, but everything you see in the vid (except for the credit screen & newspaper headline - which were done in Photoshop & imported) is achieved through the program, but Ive also been using this program in its various incarnations for nearly nine years now.
All clips ripped from the DVD and used in their original format (ie not encoded).

It's just moves from highlight to highlight to highlight, with beautiful pacing and everything's so... perfect. I think this is probably my favorite vid of the year so far. Cannot WAIT to show Kim. And to rec it, so I can look smart.

*puts on tough cowboy voice*
Yer, but the year aint over yet!
Seriosuly though its great to hear that you enjoyed it that much, I aimed for fun/lighthearted & without sounding pretentious I think I did manage to nail it. Let me know what Kim thinks - or maybe she can just tell me herself...
Thanks for the rec too!

I think it's really neat that you focused on Tony over Iron Man. It can definitely be tempting to focus on the shiny superhero footage but exploring the man behind the mask is worthwhile too. It also helps put a unique spin on things, making this a standout IM vid.
Favorite moments:
0:10 - Love the camera movement. Did you add that? I don't remember it in source.
0:22 - Cool masking! Plus it's a nice reflection of where Tony came from.
0:37 - LOVE those on-beat masks. Great internal movement in both clips.
0:45 - "Bring the fire." hee, perfect.
0:56 - AWESOME use of source effects. Seriously, those fireworks-like explosions are picture perfect for that part of the music.
1:09 - Love the on-beat breaking of the container.
1:13 - "Stuck his middle finger to the world." Another awesome clip-lyric match.
1:43 - Ha, the ice shatters on-beat not once but twice. Badass.
1:50 - "Yeah" HEE that made me giggle. You're the king of lip-sync.
2:01 - And yet another giggle-worthy moment. I love this intercutting of Tony's technical difficulties with his previous playboy lifestyle.
2:42 - I like how the glow intensifies in time with the music. Very nifty.
3:10 - You're right, that is way cool. I can see why it's one of your favorite parts. ;)
3:17 - "Trying to get a flat stomach." LOL, well that's one way to go about it. ;)
3:29 - "I wish I could be as cool as you." Oh, next time Rhodey. <3
3:43 - "But I can't and I won't live a lie." Again, perfect clip choice.
Like I told you earlier, I suspected that you were going to make an Iron Man vid to this song, but I hadn't expected it to work this well. This was a lot of fun to watch and I definitely hope to get to see it on the big screen at CVV. :D

Im so happy that, as one of the biggest comic book geek types I know, that you enjoyed it that much & that it exceed your expectations. The Tony focus just seemed totally appropriate here. I could have just gone with random action & only used all the cool shots from the movie but I reckon it would have been a lesser experience.
And yes, I added the camera movement, just a few keyframes with a smooth acceleration (as opposed to straight linear) makes it look more "real".
And the other IM vid Im doing is also "rock-worthy" but more serious as opposed to the fun loving cheeky style vid this is.

Unsurprisingly, this is stellar. Expect some pimpage soon. You have such a great eye for layering of imagery, sound; creating obvious and surprising parallels in both (if that even makes sense), and your sense of rhythm is always spot on. I'm extremely picky about sharp editing, but you've never disappointed on that front! (I'm especially fond of the two "take your time" verses, in terms of sequences that stood out to me.)
In short, I am just gushing now! Another fantastic vid.

And thankyou for your insight into the vid, it was cool to hear about all the things you got from it.
Please don't take what my avatar says literally - in fact you are welcome to do the opposite! You gave me such an awesome rap on Matrix Life last time, that I'm looking forward to what you are going to say about Let it Rock. :)
